FAQ | OKM Knowledge Base

Many questions reach us by phone, e-mail and via social media. We have summarized the most frequent questions and answer them for you.

Gold & Metal Detection

How do you find gold using OKM detectors?

OKM detectors separate targets by their signal: iron objects give a distinct signature that can be filtered out, so you're not stuck digging trash. Natural gold nuggets also read differently than processed gold like jewelry or coins, since purity and alloy differ. Other metal finds nearby often mark ground worth searching further for gold.

Can OKM detectors separate gold from silver?

No, 3D ground scanners can't directly identify or separate gold from other metals. What they show is the anomaly's depth, size, and shape, which experienced users learn to read. Many prospectors also rely on associated finds nearby, since old metal debris or mining traces often mark ground worth digging further for gold.

Can OKM magnetometers detect gold?

No. A magnetometer only detects ferromagnetic materials, mainly iron — not gold, silver, or other non-ferrous metals directly. It can still help indirectly: iron fittings or old digging traces near a find often point to promising ground.

What is the difference between Mineral Scan and classic VLF metal detection?

Mineral Scan analyzes ground changes and mineralization over an area using passive magnetic field sensing, while classic VLF metal detection is an active measurement that pinpoints individual metallic objects — which also makes VLF well suited for finding larger natural gold nuggets.

How do you find water using OKM detectors?

The OKM GeoSeeker is designed to locate water reservoirs and underground cavities using geoelectric measurement, reaching depths of up to 250m.

Ground Conditions & Detection Depth

How do you find metal in highly mineralized soil using OKM detectors?

For highly mineralized soil, OKM recommends the Rover C4 or eXp 7000 Professional Plus.

Can OKM detectors be used on steep or uneven terrain?

OKM scanners can also be used on steep hillsides and uneven mountainous terrain, as long as you can establish a consistent scan field of approximately 5 × 5 meters and perform the scan systematically. The Rover C4, eXp 7000 Professional Plus, and Fusion Light are especially well suited for steep terrain.

How deep can OKM detectors detect a metal box?

Depends on the actual dimensions and the type of metal. Our devices not only detect the metal, they also show where the ground was disturbed (a hole was dug) when the metal box was placed in it.

How deep can OKM detectors detect a large treasure chest?

Under ideal conditions, OKM detectors can reach up to 25m. Realistic depth for a treasure chest depends heavily on what metal it actually contains — small iron fittings or hinges give a much weaker signal than a solid metal object of similar size, so actual detection depth is significantly less in those cases.

How deep can OKM detectors detect a cavity or tunnel?

Up to 25m depending on size and soil conditions, 1m x 1m minimum.

Underground Structures & Utilities

Can OKM detectors also detect non-metallic cavities, tunnels, or caves?

Yes. Certain OKM 3D ground scanners can also detect and visualize non-metallic underground structures such as cavities, tunnels, chambers, or caves as anomalies — for example, the eXp 7000 Professional Plus and its Tunnel Scan mode.

Can OKM detectors locate underground utilities like pipes and cables?

Yes, the OKM Gepard GPR 3D can be used to locate underground utilities such as pipes and cables, providing 3D subsurface data for further analysis.

Quality & Authenticity

Are OKM 3D ground scanners a scam?

No. OKM 3D ground scanners use physical measurement principles to detect changes and anomalies in the subsurface, rather than methods such as dowsing. Their accuracy depends on soil conditions, target characteristics, correct scanning technique, and operator experience.

What is the difference between OKM detectors and a long range locator?

Unlike typical long-range locators, OKM devices are based on established, physics-based measurement methods rather than unproven concepts.

How can I recognize a counterfeit OKM detector?

Buy only through authorized dealers and check the serial number and origin of your device.

Where are OKM detectors made?

For over 25 years, in Germany.
